REFLECTION ON BEHAVIOURISM
In this reflection I like to highlight some comments against using behavioral methods in the classrooms.
‘Behaviorism is a theory of animal and human learning that focus on the behavior of the learner and the changes of the behavior that occurs when learning takes place‘.(woollard 2010). It is a theory of learning focusing on observable behaviors and discounting any mental activity. Learning is defined simply as the acquisition of new behavior.
They call this method of learning “conditioning”. The two types of conditioning are operant and classical conditioning.
Against using behavioral methods in our classrooms.
To eliminate a negative or undesirable behavior, behaviorists offer punishments. If we are giving punishments in schools like detaining suspending or standing outside in the classrooms students well start to hate learning and they will hesitant and will feel uncomfortable to come school.Even court’s rulings are against using corporal punishments.
· Direct and teacher centered
The direct instruction method doesn't incorporate the teacher's personality or creativity within the lesson. So students will feel bored within the classrooms and it will leads to behavioral problems.
· Ignores the mental process
Behaviorists also believes that the environment shapes the behavior through the principles of environmental rewards and punishments. They did not include the unseen mental process in learning. But we should remember that learning will not always seen from the behavior changes.
· Behaviorism is based upon the stimuli and response
In a class child might respond to a stimulus of the question “what are seven times three?” with the automatic response, “21”. Learning can be seen through behavior but we cannot say that the students has got the concept. It should be noted here that making a correct response does not necessarily shows the understanding. At the same time we should understand that animals also can answer like that if we train them properly.
An incident happened when i was young
When I was young between 12-14, I had too much craze in collecting film magazines and photos of actors and actress who were fame during the time. Even I had a big album with my famous Hollywood and Bollywood heroes and heroines. Many oppressors came as a burden against my strange hobby. This included my parents, who strongly protested with a belief that it could affect my studies. So once they saw my albums they hide it. They knew I would not accept it, so they withdrew my issues by presenting me a laptop. Thereafter i could not find any of my albums pictures, but i was not sad because, I really like the surprise gift given by my parents.
